Ken Mills opened Mills Fence Company in 1970 in Cincinnati, Ohio while also working the night shift full-time at General Motors (GM). Today, the company has four locations and over 150 employees and subcontractors. Ken's childhood dream of owning his own business is now a $40+ million family-owned and operated enterprise.
"Mills Fence has been a family business since its inception in 1970 with several family members having worked here both past and present," says COO Jonas Allen Ken's wife Patti did the payroll in the early days and worked in the office during her summer breaks from teaching. In 1975, Ken's brother, Alton Mills, became a co-owner with him until his retirement in 2005.
"There's an inherent trust and understanding that comes with working alongside family," says John Lyttle. "The role everyone plays is based on their strengths and interests. Ken has always enjoyed the 'wheeling & dealing' part of purchasing, while I've always enjoyed selling. Ashley has a science background, so she has an understanding of the more technical aspects of gate operators." Although Mills Fence Company is still a family business at its core, it has evolved into a "business of families."
"Several employees have brought their own family members into the company. Fathers working with their sons and brothers working together has also been a long-standing tradition amongst Mills employees," says Allen. While working side-by-side with the people you trust the most is rewarding, Ken has always strived for employees to maintain a work/life balance.
"It's a joy to come to work because our people want to do what is best for the business and our customers," says Lyttle. "However, it's important that our employees don't bring business home with them. We do our best to follow Ken's advice that fence issues can only be addressed and fixed at the office."
Growth has always been important to Ken, and Mills Fence Company doesn't have plans to stop any time soon.
